gift-of-character

Piggy backing on my previous post, below is a list of desired character traits I want to model for my family.

  • Kindness
  • Generosity
  • Humility
  • Discipline
  • Courage
  • Strength
  • Faithfulness
  • Wit
  • Passion

  • Christian

The bar is set. And it is set high. It’s time to get tired.

Pursuing the invisible

pursuing-the-invisible

A big theme in my life is the pursuit of the invisible. In some ways, it is a concept that is woven in all of life.

Parenting is no different.

Being a Dad is learning as you go.  It’s an on-the-job-training environment that expands your limits, strengthens your character and gives you gray hair. But when it comes to the future — when it comes from guiding my boys into manhood …

I need to be the man I want my boys to become.

Dennis Prager has said  – as parents — we are not raising children. We are raising adults. That responsibility begins with me. Not in crafting traits in my boys, but modeling them.

Thankful

A friend may well be reckoned the masterpiece of nature.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

I’m thankful for friendship today. With my beautiful wife. With my lovely family. With my cherished and loyal friends. I’m thankful for all the little things we share. Especially the little things, actually. They are what make up our everydays and I love spending them together.

Thank God for each of you.

Prophets of a future not our own

romero

It helps, now and then, to step back and take a long view.
The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts,
it is even beyond our vision.
We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction
of the magnificent enterprise that is God’s work.
Nothing we do is complete, which is a way of saying
that the kingdom always lies beyond us.
No statement says all that could be said.
No prayer fully expresses our faith.
No confession brings perfection.
No pastoral visit brings wholeness.
No program accomplishes the church’s mission.
No set of goals and objectives includes everything.
This is what we are about.
We plant the seeds that one day will grow.
We water seeds already planted,
knowing that they hold future promise.
We lay foundations that will need further development.
We provide yeast that produces far beyond our capabilities.
We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation
in realizing that. This enables us to do something,
and to do it very well. It may be incomplete,
but it is a beginning, a step along the way,
an opportunity for the Lord’s grace to enter and do the rest.
We may never see the end results, but that is the difference
between the master builder and the worker.
We are workers, not master builders; ministers, not messiahs.
We are prophets of a future not our own.
- Father Oscar Romero

There is enough wisdom in this one statement to sustain a man of God for a lifetime.  Absolutely profound and humbling. We are but His messengers.

Dallas sports radio

radio

Talk radio has had a place in my life since childhood. Politics, religion, culture and sports all have a forum on the radio waves — and i have always made time to indulge in the conversation.

As a child, I recall tucking headphones under my pillow case in order to covertly listen to Sports Byline with Ron Barr after bedtime. In fact, when I was 12 I called in a won their hourly trivia contest. I sprinted down the hall to wake my parents up overjoyed. It never occurred to me until now that they probably didn’t have many 12 year old listeners on a late night talk show.

Now while sports talk is but one of many avenues I traffic, it is one of the few types of talk that typically is station-wide and primarily locally focussed. This creates a brand loyalty amongst listeners and, being a man of many opinions, I must pontificate on the state of Dallas sports radio.

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”
– Steve Jobs

Whether we’re talking about computers, chairs, or websites — questions of design don’t begin with color or style. They are about purpose and desired outcome. Designers provide solutions, not mere decoration.
